WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!!
Welcome back to school all
bilingual students! The English teachers at IES Doñana wish you all the best
for this school year 2012/2013, especially to our new first year students (1º
ESO).
We would also like to introduce you to our new language assistant this year. We hope you can help us make him feel as home as possible in our school and our town.
My name is Oliver Nartey, I am 20 years old and I go to the University of Exeter, where I am studying French and Spanish. I have lived in a town called Bromley in South London all my life. Bromley is a relatively small town, but because it is so accessible in terms of transport, you can travel anywhere in London because of the excellent bus and train systems. There is a beautiful shopping centre there called 'The Glades' with a variety of shops.
I love sport. I play rugby and football, and I am a football fanatic. I watch every game that I can and the Spanish team I support is Real Madrid. I am a keen reader too, and absolutely love watching television. My favorite programme is a soap opera called Eastenders, which is set in the East of London and the characters have very funny accents. Finally, I am very much into music. I like all sorts, particularly rap but also enjoy Spanish music too. I have learned a few of them, and they are very catchy!
We also encourage you all to
use this blog and post as many comments as you can. Remember, all you need for
that is a gmail account.

2ESO just completed their project titled "be water my friend" and this past week I showed them a video that included clips of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. The Columbia River Gorge is a deep canyon of the Columbia River that stretches 130km as the river moves westward. It is a much forested area with hundreds of km of hiking trails. It also has many camping sites as well as other outdoor recreation. It is known for is pristine beauty and being extremely green with many creeks, springs and waterfalls. Portland (the biggest city of Oregon) receives all its water from the Bull Run River which is within the Cascade mountain range and the Gorge. With that said, clean, fresh water is very common within this area of Oregon due to our large amount of rainfall as well as the protection for nature in this area.
Currently in Oregon there is a big debate between Oregonians and the local government. The company Nestlé wants to bottle water from a creek in the Gorge for private profit. This is very dangerous for the Columbia River Gorge because of the threat it poses to our wildlife and nature. But that’s not all, Nestlé wants to bottle public watered for private use.
Below is a video about the current situation with Nestlé and the people of oregon. It shows some of the facts about bottled water as well as many clips of the Columbia River Gorge.

Easter in England!
Hi,
I know this is a little late but I thought I would tell you all about Easter in my country.
In England, Easter is not widely celebrated as a religious holiday. There are religious ceremonies over Easter weekend, but the majority of people don't really celebrate in a religious way.
In schools, we have two weeks off to celebrate Easter. The special days include: Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Sunday. This year, Easter weekend started on Friday 6th April and finished on Monday 9th April. We also celebrate Shrove Tuesday. This takes place before Easter, and is more commonly called 'Pancake Day'. On this day, everyone eats pancakes. This started because in the olden days, people used to give up all rich foods for 40 days (not including Sundays) before Easter, so they would have a feast the day before. These days, most people just give up one item of luxury food, for most this is something such as meat or chocolate. Most Christian people take part in Lent, even if they are not very religious. The day after pancake day is called Ash Wednesday, and this is the official date Lent begins. Lent finishes on the Saturday before Easter Sunday. The main reason Christians celebrate Lent is because in the Bible, it says that Jesus spent 40 nights alone in the desert and was not tempted by the food offered by the Devil. Christians stop eating luxury foods for 40 days to represent the sacrifice made by Jesus.
The main tradition at Easter in England is to give chocolate eggs to children on Easter Sunday, and they are delivered by the Easter Bunny (a bit like Santa Claus bringing presents at christmas!). These are given on Easter Sunday to celebrate the end of Lent, when people can eat luxury foods again. We give chocolate eggs because an egg is a symbol of a new life, and this represents Jesus being resurrected. People used to give decorated eggs to each other at Easter, but now we have changed to chocolate eggs. However, in primary schools, most children spend the day before the Easter holidays decorating eggs in school, and there are usually competitions to judge who has the best decorated egg.
As you can see, Easter is very different in England compared to Spain!!

Easter In the USA
Easter is a catholic holiday in the United States just like it is here in Spain. However, there are a few traditions that even non-religious families celebrate. The first is the dying or coloring of eggs known as "Easter Eggs" which is used to symbolize the tomb of Jesus. Before Easter Sunday, friends and families get together to dye eggs to make colorful and pretty. Although this is traditionally a religious activity, it is very fun for young children and has become more of a tradition celebrating spring which has arrived.
Here are 2 examples of Easter Eggs:
The second tradition is called an Easter Egg Hunt. This is also a fun activity for young children in which parents hide the (sometimes visible) Easter Eggs from the kids. The kids then find and collect the hidden eggs. It happens both inside and outside of houses but is most common outside in parks and large areas.

MIRROR MIRROR
If you like fantasy, you'll love this film. It's the adaptation of the traditional fairy tale with a modern twist. Starring Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Lily Collins as Snow White and Armie Hammer as Prince Alcott, the film has just been released. The soundtrack includes the song "I Believe in Love", which is sung by Lily Collins herself (she's the daughter of Phil Collins, from Genesis). This song has also been adapted to Spanish by the pop star Soraya. If you want to learn the names of the Seven Dwarfs, click here and find out...
HAPPY EASTER!

Blake's Winter Vacation
For the winter vacation, I had the opportunity to travel to a few cities in Europe. I visited Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague and Munich. While there I went to many museums and parks. It is very hard for me to say which city was my favorite because I enjoyed them all. Truthfully they were all great and they were all unique. I spent most of my days exploring the cities and trying to stay warm because it was very cold. The high temperature some days was just 2 degrees Celsius, which is very different from Almonte. I wanted to share a few of my photos from my trip so you guys could see them. I hope you enjoy them and I am looking forward to reading your comments.
